Beddelsteen

The Celtic Fortress “Beddelsteen” This fortress belongs to the around 40 prehistoric hilltop fortifications in Luxembourg. The origins of these structures go back to the late Bronze Age and the early Iron Age. The fortress on the “Beddelsteen” likely dates to the early La Tène period (5th -4th century BCE). The gate of this structure was on the southern slope facing the “Gäipentraap” where the main wall turned to the west. A perimeter wall additional secured the flank. The remains of the defensive wall contain an interior space of around 1.5 hectars, which turns in the direction of the modern village center. The eastern side, facing the plateaus of the Luxembourg sandstone, is secured by double walls. A shallow trench and a low wall form the first line of defense before a second, deeper trench, as well as a main wall running parallel to the first. One has to imagine this defensive work as solid dry masonary crowned with wooden breastworks
