Historical site Bust “Bernhard J.Cigrand”
Bourglinster rue de la forge ( Schneddeschgaass). Reachable via the hiking trail J15

In front of the former village smithy, the house of his father, stands the bust of Bernard J. Cigrand. His father, the smith Nicolas Cigrand, emigrated with other residents of Bourglinster to the USA at age 21, where he married Susanne Schmidt, originally from Mensdorf, in 1856. On October 1st, 1866, their son Bernard J., their sixth child, was born in Waubeka (Ozaukee County) in the state of Wisconsin. Bernard J. Cigrand worked as a teacher and was a passionate supported of the Democratic Party, for which he stood for election. As a senator and a friend of President Wilson, he was able to win over a majority in favor of instituting FLAG DAY in the USA – a festival which is still celebrated with great pomp in the USA. Throughout his life, Bernard J. Cigrand never hid his Luxembourgian roots. His bust was designed by Georges Calteux and brought on June 9th, 2017 by the then Cultural Committee from the castle moot, where it had been provisionally displayed for years, to the birthplace of his father. The base of the bust was made of corten steel by smith Emile Weber-Cigrand from Bourglinster in his workshop.
