Der Wald als Lebensraum

The forest is more than the sum of its trees and more then merely a source of raw materials. It is a diverse habitat. Trees and bushes grow there, mushrooms and reeds. Alongside wild game, numerous other animals live in the forest. Conservationists seek to preserve this diversity, as well as individual species. The forest is also a place where we can spend out free time and relax. The interplay and reciprocal interactions between various elements in the forest ecosystem allow the forest to optimally fulfill all of its functions. More than a third of the land area of Luxembourg is covered by forest, which comes to nearly 90,000 hectares. In other words: the woods of Luxembourg cover the area of more than 127,000 football fields. 55% (49,250 ha) of our forest is privately owned. 33% is owned by municipalities and 12% belong to the national government and public institutions. This portion is subject to forestry management. Sustainability Our forests are largely harvested forests which are sustainably managed by their owners. Sustainable forestry means that the management and use of forests and forest areas are undertaken in such a way that their biodiversity, productivity, capacity to rejuvenate and vitality are maintained. Their potential, now and in the future, to fulfill their corresponding ecological, economic and social functions on a local, national and global level, without damaging other ecosystems. Because it is necessary to meet the desire of consumers for plausible information on all products, including wood products, the product “wood” has received an international recognized label. In this way, a constructive contribution can be made to preventing the destruction of forests around the world. Two certificates, FSC and PEFC, prove and document the sustainability of forest management. This was also one goal of the Climate Pact which our parish entered into. The forests in our parish are all PEFC certified. PEFC – Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification – goes back to an initiative of the European Association of Forest Owners and was founded in 1999 in Helsinki on the basis of the EU Ministers Conference for the protection of Europe’s forests. PEFC conducts inspections to ensure the respective management standards are fulfilled. Forestry Forest Users Forest Residents
